Too much for not enough

The other day I discovered the difference between digital cable and HDTV cable from my cable provider. Time Warner Minnesota is, in my experience, a rather good cable provider. They get technology and tend not to create foolish barriers restricting use, unlike many other cable companies.

Unfortunately for me the HDTV upgrade is unattractive. The problem is the $30 install cost. It's just too much to pay for only one HDTV channel in the basic line-up. Based on their FAQ all I seem to need is a new set top box. I think I can handle plugging the cables into the correct jacks on my television and stereo. The FAQ isn't clear on whether something more needs to be done, nor did customer service.

Interestingly, Time Warner Austin has the installation guide for the HDTV set top converter online.
