Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo explains well the pro-war view of the Iraq invasion. Essentially the pro-war camp likes to reduce any argument to a numbers game as if it were a sporting event.
As Josh points out it's either incredibly simplistic or it's calculated to divert the argument into a trivial, unrelated point that seems relative. The latter is, I have noticed, the modus operandi of all Republican apologists. They can not win arguments based on reasoned thought, so they seek to trivialize the other side's argument and get their opponent to defend a minor point.
Of course when that fails there's always falling back on character assassination and shouting, which Republicans seem to use often…
